TENNO-TANJOBI IPPAN-SANGA
(Our Visit of the General Public to the Palace for the Emperor’s Birthday)
2009年（平成21年）12月23日の天皇誕生日は暖かく、とても良い天気でした。
かねてより天皇誕生日一般参賀に行きたいと思っていましたが、その日に実現することにしました。
It was warm and clear on December 23rd, the Emperor’s Birthday, in 2009 (Heisei 21st yr).
I had long wanted to visit the palace for the Emperor’s birthday, so I decided to realize it on that day.
大手町駅で地下鉄を下り、正門まで歩いて行きました。
まず荷物預り所がありました。
I got off the subway at Otemachi Station and walked to the main gate.
At first I saw a baggage corner.
参賀者は皇宮護衛官によるセキュリティーチェックを受けました。
Well-wishers underwent security checks by the Imperial guards.
正門より皇居内に入りました。
儀礼服姿の皇宮護衛官が立っていました。
We went into the Imperial Palace through the main gate.
There stood the Imperial guard in a formal uniform.
皇居内から見た正門石橋です。
This is a stone bridge at the main gate seen from the inside of the Imperial Palace.
長和殿前に次々と参賀者が集まっていました。
参賀者のほとんどが年配の方だと思っていましたが、実際は若い人の方が多かったです。
外国人の方もたくさん来ていました。
The well-wishers gathered in front of Chowa-den (reception hall) one after another.
I had thought that most well-wishers were elderly people, but actually there were more younger people than elderly people.
I saw a lot of foreigners, too.
間もなく天皇陛下、皇后陛下、皇太子同妃両殿下、秋篠宮同妃両殿下が長和殿ベランダにお出ましになりました。
天皇陛下は皆に短いお言葉を下さいました。
Before long, the Emperor and Empress, the Crown Prince and Princess and the Prince and Princess Akishino appeared on a balcony of the Chowa-den.
The Emperor gave a short speech to the public.
参賀者は小さな日の丸の旗を振りました。
そして「天皇陛下万歳！」の声とともに一斉に万歳三唱をしました。
意外なことに中国や韓国の人も一緒に万歳をしていました。
天皇陛下や他の皇族の方々は手を振ってお応えになりました。
The well-wishers waved small Japanese flags of HINOMARU (the Rising Sun).
And then they gave three BANZAI (cheer in a Japanese way) saying “Long live our noble Majesty!”.
To my surprise, Chinese and Koreans also gave BANZAI.
The Emperor and the other royal families waved back to the public.
あちこちに皇宮護衛官が立ち、参賀者に鋭い目線を送っていました。
The Imperial guards stood here and there and kept their sharp gazes fixed on the well-wishers.
坂下門から退出する人もいました。
Some of the well-wishers exited from Sakashita-mon Gate.
宮内庁職員が参賀者の名刺を受取っていました。
そして多くの人が記帳していました。
The staff of the Imperial Household Agency received MEISHI (business card) from the well-wishers.
And a lot of people signed the guest register.
参賀者のために喫煙所が設けられていました。
A smoking area was provided for the well-wishers.
参賀者のために水飲所も用意されていました。
A place for drinking water was provides for the well-wishers.
富士見櫓の前に報道の車両が止まっていました。
Cars of the news media parked in front of FUJIMI-YAGURA (Mt.Fuji Viewing Keep).
本丸跡で参賀者がくつろいでいました。
Some of the well-wishers relaxed on the ruins of HONMARU (the most central bailey containing the keep).
天守台跡に登ってみました。
I went up on the foundation stones of the keep.
北詰門より出て、お堀沿いに散策して帰りました。
I exited from Kitazume-mon Gate and took a walk along the moat.
ニュースによるとこの日、過去最多の人々が一般参賀に訪れたそうです。
午前中だけで23,3928人だったそうです。
According to the news, a record number of well-wishers visited the Imperial Palace.
It was reported that as many as 23,928 people participated in the morning event alone.
