WAGAYA NO TSUYU
(Our Rainy Season Experience)

 

てるてる坊主の作り方です。
（生徒のYちゃんが画像撮影を協力してくれました。　ありがとう！）

(1)　ティッシュなどの白い紙か、ハンカチなどの白い布を数枚使います。　屋外に吊るす場合は布で作ります。
(2)　1～2枚を丸めて頭部の中身を作ります。　又は、ピンポン球を使っても良いでしょう。
(3)　広げた1枚の中心に(2)を置きます。
(4)　中身を包み込みます。
(5)　指で首を作ります。
(6)　輪ゴムか紐を首に何度か巻きつけます。
(7)　しっかり固定します。
(8) マジックで顔を描きます。　屋外に吊るす時は油性マジックを使います。　のっぺらぼうのてるてる坊主を吊るし、晴れたら顔を描く人もいます。
(9) 出来上がりです。　晴れて欲しい日の前日に、頭のてっぺんから紐で窓辺に吊るします。

How to make TERU-TERU-BOZU
(I appreciate having my student Y-chan’s cooperation in taking these photos.)

(1)  Use some pieces of tissue, white paper or white cloth such as a handkerchief.  When hanging one outside, use some cloth.
(2)  Round 1 or 2 pieces of (1) to make an inside of the head.  A ping-pong ball can be used instead.
(3)  Put (2) in the center of a piece of (1).
(4)  Cover (2) with a piece of (1).
(5)  Make a neck with your fingers.
(6)  Wind a rubber band or a string around the neck several times.
(7)  Fasten a rubber band or a string.
(8)  Draw a face.  Use a permanent marker when hanging one outside.  Some draw a face only when it is clear.
(9)  Finished.  Hang (8) from the top of the head with a string by the window on the day before you expect clear weather.

 

梅雨が近づくと、デパートやスーパーでは傘、レインコート、雨靴の特設コーナーが設けられます。
憂鬱になりがちな雨の日も、カラフルな雨具で楽しい気分になります。

When TSUYU is drawing near, special corners of umbrellas, raincoats and rain shoes open in department stores and supermarkets.
I tend to feel depressed on rainy days, but colorful rain items can make me feel happier.

 

梅雨時の和菓子は、紫陽花をかたどったものが多く見られます。
てるてるぼうずが描かれたお煎餅も見つけました。

Many Japanese sweets in TSUYU have the motif of hydrangeas.
I also found SENBEI (a Japanese cracker) with TERU-TERU-BOZU.

 

梅雨時は我が家の玄関では、傘をさした大きな蛙がお出迎えしてくれます。
（写真の右の列の）3枚の南画は義母が梅雨を題材に描きました。
上から順に「雨と蝸牛」、「紫陽花」、「螢」です。

In TSUYU, a big frog with an umbrella welcome visitors at the hall of my house.
My mother-in-law drew three pictures (in the right side of the pictures above) that deal with TSUYU.
They are ‘Rain and a Snail’, ‘Hydrangea’ and ‘A Firefly’ from the top to the bottom.

 

紫陽花や菖蒲などをモチーフにした食器は、梅雨の時期に使うのにぴったりです。

The tableware with the motif of hydrangeas or irises is perfect for the rainy season.

 

野球ファンにとって天気は気になることの1つです。
タイガースのホームである甲子園球場はドーム球場ではないので、タイガースファンは特に天気が気になります。
梅雨の真っ最中のこの日の甲子園でのタイガースの試合は、残念ながら雨で中止になりました。

One of the worrying matters for baseball fans is the weather.
The Koshien Baseball Stadium, the Tigers’ home, is not a domed one, so the Tigers’ fans especially worry about the weather.
On this day in the middle of TSUYU, the Tigers’ game in Koshien was unfortunately cancelled due to rain.

 

我が家は大きな川から比較的近い所にあります。
近年、周辺では大きな水害は起きていませんが、地球温暖化のため豪雨が降り易くなり、特に梅雨時は心配です。
備えあれば憂いなしで、本や書類は2階に置いたり、いざという時に土嚢代わりに使えるようにプランターを庭に置いておいたり、水や食料を備蓄して、常に水害対策を考えています。

My house is located rather near a big river.
During the past years, the area I live has not suffered from flooding, but I am still anxious about torrential rain due to global warming, especially in the rainy season.
As the proverb goes, ‘Providing is preventing.’ I am always preparing for flooding: storing books and documents on the second floor, placing cultivation planters in the garden for using sandbags in need and storing water and food.
