SHONAN HIRATSUKA TANABATA-MATSURI
(The Shonan Hiratsuka Star Festival)

 

湘南ひらつか七夕まつりは60年以上続いているお祭りです。
1950年（昭和25年）7月に戦後の復興を祝うお祭りが平塚で盛大に行われました。
その翌年1951年（昭和26年）7月に仙台七夕祭りに倣い、第１回の七夕まつりが開催されました。
現在では300万人以上の人々が500本以上の七夕飾りを楽しむ、日本を代表する七夕のお祭りのひとつとなっています。

SHONAN HIRATSUKA TANABATA-MATSURI has been celebrated for more than 60 years.
In July of 1950 (Showa 25th yr), people in Hiratsuka held a grand festival for the celebration of the reconstruction after World War ll.
In July of the following year, 1951 (Showa 26th yr), the first TANABATA-MATSURI was held, following Sendai TANABATA.
Nowadays, more than 3 million people enjoy more than 500 TANABATA-KAZARI, and this festival has become one of the most famous star festivals in Japan.

1976年（昭和51年）より毎年、祭りの約1ヶ月前に織姫コンテストが開催されます。
応募者の中から美しく健康的な女性が3名選ばれます。

The ORI-HIME (the Weaver Star) contest has been held about one month before TANABATA-MATSURI every year since 1976 (Showa 51st yr).
Three beautiful, healthy ladies are selected among a pool of applicants.

2006年（平成18年）の第56回湘南ひらつか七夕まつりは7月6日から9日まで開催されました。
私は2日目の7日に行きました。
七夕千人パレードが行われる日でしたが、仕事のために残念ながら間に合いませんでした。
平塚の駅を下りて、すぐに祭り会場が広がっていて、私が思っていたよりはるかに大規模で華やかでした。

The 56th SHONAN HIRATSUKA TANABATA-MATSURI of 2006 (Heisei 18th yr) was held from July 6th to the 9th.
I went to the festival on the second day, the 7th.
The TANABATA Thousand People Parade was held on that day, but unfortunately I missed it because of my work.
As soon as I got off the train at Hiratuska Station, I was in the middle of the festival, and I found that it was much more large-scale and splendid than I had imagined.

芸術的なものから子供が作った可愛らしいものまで、色とりどりの美しい竹飾りが数多く並んでいました。
その年のオリンピックのフィギュアスケート金メダリスト、荒川静香さんがイナバウアーのポーズをとっている竹飾りがありました。
また同年のワールドカップ直後プロサッカー引退を声明したばかりの中田英寿さんの竹飾りもありました。

There were many colorful and beautiful TAKE-KAZARI ranging from highly artistic ones, to cute ones made by young children.
I found TAKE-KAZARI of Shizuka Arakawa, who is the ladies’ figure skating gold medalist of the Olympics held in that year, was in the pose of her special ‘Ina Bauer’.
I also found TAKE-KAZARI in the shape of Hidetoshi Nakata, who just announced his retirement from professional soccer soon after the World Cup in the same year.

毎年竹飾りコンテストが行われ、この年のコンテストで滝口カバンの竹飾りが3つの特選のうちの1つに選ばれました。
この店舗の竹飾りは毎年大掛かりでレベルが高く、注目を集めているそうです。

Every year the TAKE-KAZARI contest is held, and TAKE-KAZARI from the Takiguchi Bag Store was one of the three champions in this year.
TAKE-KAZARI from this store is the main attraction every year because it is always magnificently and skillfully designed.

竹飾りコンテスト入選作品のひとつのジュエリーツツミの竹飾りです。

One of the third prize TAKE-KAZARI was from the Tsutsumi Jewelry Shop.

また歌謡ショー、キャラクターショー、舞踏ショーなども行われていて、私はメジャーデビューを控えた歌手のライブを見ました。

Concerts, character shows and dance shows were also held, and I saw a concert of a singer who would soon make a major debut.

夏のお祭りの定番であるお化け屋敷もありました。

I found a haunted house, a popular attraction for a summer festival.

ピッチングゲームでは商品のおもちゃを狙って腕を競い合っていました。

People were competing in a pitching game for a prize.

通りには食べ物やゲームの露天もたくさん出ていました。
浴衣を着た可愛い子供やカップルが露天を覗いていました。

There were a lot of street stalls of food and games along the street.
Cute children and couples wearing YUKATA (a simple cotton KIMONO for summer) were enjoying the street stalls.

最初の3日は夜9時半まで、最終日は9時まで開催されていました。
夜は竹飾りが美しくライトアップされ、一層ロマンチックな七夕まつりを楽しめました。

This festival was held until 9:30 pm on the first three days, and until 9:00 pm on the last day.
TAKE-KAZARI were lit up beautifully in the evening, so people enjoyed romantic TANABATA-MATSURI.
