The Japanese pronunciation of November 26th (1126) is similar to “Ii-furo” (good bath); therefore, the Japan Bath Additive Industry Association designated it as the day of “Ii-furo-no-hi” (Good Bathing Day).

We, Japanese people, are famous as “bath lovers”, and we especially like soaking in the hot water in a bathtub.

Some love a long soak in the bath, and others like a quick bath: “karasu-no-gyozui” (literal translation is “a crow’s quick dip in a bath”).

The biggest difference between Western bathing and Japanese bathing is that Westerners wash their bodies in the bathtubs; on the other hand, we wash our bodies carefully before entering the hot water.

We enjoy bathing not only at home but also at various types of public bathing facilities.

They are traditional Japanese inns with rustic charm, gorgeous modern hotels, large public spas and traditional small public bathhouses called sento.

Many of them have both a range of different indoor baths and roten-buro (outdoor baths).

Most bathing facilities are separated by gender, and very rarely there are a few onsen, where men and women bath together, called konyoku, mixed-gender hot springs, in the rural areas of Tohoku and Kyushu.

Except for onsen (hot springs), common public bath facilities heat underground water or tap water.

On the other hand, onsen uses spring water which is made hotter than the average air temperature by geothermal heat and contains special substances.

Gensen-kakengashi (a 100 % natural onsen) is defined as a fresh onsen flowing directly from the source without any filtration or additives and constantly pouring into the bathtub from which excess water is overflowing.

However, temperature control by adding the lowest limit water or heat is only permitted in order to make onsen suitable for bathing.

There are many volcanos in Japan, which cause disasters such as eruptions and earthquakes; on the other hand, volcanos bestow onsen (hot springs) onto people.

The benefits of onsen are scientifically verified such as relief from stress, pain, high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, burns, skin disease and gout.

Besides bathing, drinking the water from some kinds of onsen has various health benefits; therefore, people have drunk onsen water for more than 1300 years although these days only onsen with special permission offer this.

Onsen is popular among people of all generations, and onsen lovers make tours of onsen in Japan.

The onsen which have esthetic effects of skin beautifying and slimming are popular especially among women and even men these days.

Onsen is effectively used for the tourism industry such as Jigoku-meguri (Hells of Beppu) in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture and Atagawa Banana-wani-en (Atagawa Tropical & Alligator Garden) in Izu Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, and for cooking such as Onsen-tamago (a boiled egg in hot spring) and steamed vegetables.

Even if we don’t stay overnight at inns or hotels, we can enjoy onsen at some of them.

We need to be sure to observe various manners and rules in public bath facilities.

For example, we have to wash ourselves before entering the water, never dip our towels in the water and not wear swimsuits.

I am sure that everyone can enjoy naked onsen even though some foreign guests might feel a little shy at first.

We recommend starting with ashi-yu (a public bath for dipping only feet and legs up to the knees without shoes and socks) to people who hesitate to get undressed in company.

Many ashi-yu are open on the street corner, at resting places, in parks and near stations in the onsen town usually for free.

Many big bathing facilities have various enjoyable and relaxing services: rooms where we can lie down or sit on reclining chairs to take a nap, restaurants, massage rooms, esthetic salons and arcade games.
