Our Christmas Experience
アメリカでハロウィンの後の大きな年間行事は、11月の第4木曜日の感謝祭です。その翌日は「ブラックフライデー」と呼ばれ、デパート、スーパーマーケット、小売店などあらゆる商業施設で、一年で最も大きなセールが行われます。その日からクリスマス商戦がスタートして、一気にクリスマスムードが高まります。しかし、日本では感謝祭のお祝いの習慣がないので、アメリカよりクリスマスシーズンは早く訪れます。ハロウィン一色だった商業施設は10月31日を過ぎると、一夜でクリスマスの装飾で華やかに飾られます。それらを見るともうすぐ年末だと思うと気ぜわしい気分になると同時に、どこか心ときめきます。
In America, the major annual event following Halloween is Thanksgiving Day which falls on the fourth Thursday of November. The day following Thanksgiving Day is called “Black Friday” and the biggest sale starts in most retailers such as department stores and supermarkets. The Christmas sales battles start on that day and the Christmas atmosphere immediately increases. However, the Thanksgiving custom was not introduced into Japan, so the Christmas season starts earlier than in America. The commercial facilities filled with Halloween ornaments are brilliantly decorated with Christmas ornaments one night after October 31st. When I see them, I feel a little restless to know the end of the year will come around soon and at the same time I am excited with the upcoming holiday season.
最近はクリスマスの電飾や装飾を施す一般の自宅も増えてきました。近所でも素晴らしいイルミネーションを見ることができます。テレビや雑誌で取り上げられたお宅もあります。わんこと散歩しながらそのようなお宅めぐりを楽しみます。
Recently, even common houses are decorated with Christmas illuminations and decorations. I can find such houses which are full of the Christmas atmosphere nearby. Some of the houses are featured on television and in magazines. I really enjoy looking at those houses while taking a walk with my dogs.
男性にとってクリスマスはちょっと大変な時期かもしれません。クリスマスが近付くと有名ブランドのお店や宝飾店はカップルで賑わいます。男性は奥さんや恋人に喜んでもらうために、時には大金を使わなければいけません。どうぞ愛する人に豪華なプレゼントを買うことに躊躇しないで下さい。そうすれば素晴らしい休暇を過ごすことができるでしょう。
Christmas may be a little tough time for men. When Christmas comes around, high fashion brand shops or jewelry shops are full of couples. Men sometimes have to spend a lot of money to please their girlfriends or wives. Please don’t hesitate to buy gorgeous gifts for your sweethearts and you will certainly have a wonderful holiday.
私の子供の頃のクリスマスの思い出はいつも楽しいものでした。12月25日の朝起きると、枕元に白い袋がおいてありました。中には私が欲しかったまさにそのおもちゃがいつも入っていたので、喜びつつもどうしてサンタさんは私が欲しいものを分かったのか不思議に思っていました。会ったこともないし、電話で話したこともない私の心が読めるサンタさんを尊敬していました。そのようにして、小学校に入学するまでサンタさんがいると信じていました。プレゼント以外には、料理好きの母が家族のために作ってくれるご馳走も楽しみでした。
My Christmas memories in my childhood were always happy. On the morning of December 25th, I woke up to find a big white cloth bag at my bedside. I was very happy and surprised that the bag always contained exactly the gift which I wanted. I respected Santa Claus because he could guess what I was thinking though we never met nor talked on the phone. Therefore, I believed in him until I entered elementary school. In addition to presents, I was looking forward to a big dinner made by my mother who loved to cook for our family.
子供の頃、お菓子がいっぱい入ったサンタさんの赤いブーツをもらうのも楽しみでした。ブーツの大きさの割には中に入っているお菓子は少ないし、クリスマスが終わると長靴型の段ボールに布が貼ってあるブーツはすぐに邪魔になり捨てられました。それでも毎年、クリスマスになるともらって喜んでいました。アメリカ同様、日本で11月末になるとこの赤いブーツはあちこちの店で今でも売られはじめます。最近はさまざまな大きさで、赤だけでなく青、緑、ピンクなどのブーツを見つけることができます。私の息子は子供の頃、毎年祖父に買ってもらっていました。
When I was a child, I also looked forward to Santa’s red boots full of sweets. Not so many sweets are in the boots for its capacity. When Christmas passed by, boot-shaped corrugated cardboard which was covered with red cloth turned into just an obstacle and were thrown away. Still I was very happy to get the boots. Still now many shops and supermarkets sell such boots from the end of November as well as in the States. Lately, I have found various sizes and colors of the boots such as blue, green and pink. My son was given one by his grandfather every year when he was young.
夫の亡くなった父はクリスチャンなので、毎年クリスマスは御ミサに出席しました。私も何度か一緒に教会に行きましたが、一番の思い出はまだ幼かった息子も出席したクリスマスイブの御ミサです。息子はまだ3歳ぐらいで理解できなかったでしょうが、神父様のお話や賛美歌に一生懸命耳を傾けていました。そして夜が更けると、コクリコクリと眠り始めました。
My husband’s deceased father was a Christian, so he attended Christmas Mass. I also attended it with him several times. The most precious memory is the Christmas Eve Mass which I attended with him and my very young son, when he was probably around 3 years old. My son strained to listen to the priest and Christmas carols, though he might not have understood them. As the night was wearing on, he started dozing off.
息子はミッション系の幼稚園に通っていました。その園児はクリスマス時に降誕の劇をしました。息子は馬小屋の番人の役でした。その幼稚園では親は子供に内緒で手作りのクリスマスプレゼントを作り、幼稚園へ届ける決まりがありました。それをサンタさんからのプレゼントとして、幼稚園から子供達へ渡されます。夫は器用なので、素晴らしいプレゼントを作りました。年少さんの時は木製のピンボールゲーム、年中さんの時は手のこんだビンゴ、年長さんの時は輪投げの色とりどりの輪と的を作りました。息子はおとうさんの愛情のこもったこれらのクリスマスプレゼントもとても喜びました。もちろんその時はまだ父親ではなく、サンタさんが作ったと思っていました。
My son went to a Christian kindergarten. The kindergarteners performed a play of the Nativity. He played the role of a watch man of a barn. His kindergarten had a rule that parents made handmade Christmas gifts for their children secretly and brought them to the kindergarten. The presents were given to the children as gifts from Santa Claus. My husband is good with his hands. He made wonderful gifts for our son. He made a wooden pinball machine in the first grade, an elaborate bingo game in the second grade, and colorful rings and a large target in the third grade. Our son was very pleased with all of his father’s affectionate Christmas gifts. At that time, he didn’t know at all that his father made them, and he believed Santa Claus did.
私が結婚してからのクリスマスのご馳走に毎年欠かせないのが、若鶏のお腹にピラフを詰めたローストチキンです。作り方は簡単で、良い若鶏さえ手に入れば誰にでも美味しく作れます。息子の大好物で、クリスマス以外にも息子のお誕生日の定番メニューです。これは義母の得意料理のひとつで私に作り方を伝授してくれました。義母は毎年焼いていましたが、高齢になり代わりに私が焼くようになりました。オーブンにチキンを入れて10分も経つと、私の気分を高揚させる香りが家の中に漂い始めます。このローストチキンは息子の大好物でクリスマスだけでなく、お誕生日にも毎年焼いていました。息子は料理が上手で、高校生になると私の代わりに作ってくれるようになりました。
I have made a roast chicken stuffed with pilaf for a Christmas feast every year since I got married. The recipe of this chicken is very simple, so anyone can make a great roast chicken only if a young whole chicken of high quality is available. This was one of my mother-in-law’s specialties and she told me how to cook it. She used to roast it every Christmas day and I took it over from her when she became older. Around 10 minutes after I put the chicken into the oven, a reassuring smell to me begin to float in the house. My son loves it very much, so I also made it on his birthday every year. He is a good cook, so he has cooked a chicken by himself since he was a high school student.
忙しい年末にクリスマスのお料理を作るのは大変です。ありがたいことに息子は毎年料理の腕を上げ、ローストチキンだけでなく、苺の載ったクリスマスケーキ、雪だるま型のパン、モンブランなどさまざまなスイーツも作ってくれるようになりました。家族の愛犬のふーちゃんとおーちゃんも一緒にクリスマスのお祝いをしました。2014年（平成26年）のクリスマスまで後2ヶ月という時にふーちゃんは12歳で天国の虹の橋のたもとへ行ってしまいました。ふーちゃんのいないその年のクリスマスはとても寂しかったです。
I have been tasked with making Christmas dinner during busy year-end days. Fortunately, my son has been improving his cooking skills year by year. He cooked various sweets as well as the roast chicken such as a Christmas cake with strawberries on top, buns in the shape of a snowman and Mon Blancs (a piece of cake which is made from sweetened chestnuts and whipped cream). Our beloved Fu-chan and Oh-chan celebrated Christmas with us. In 2014 (Heisei 26th yr), just about 2 months before Christmas, Fu-chan went over to the foot of the Rainbow Bridge of Heaven. We spent a very lonely Christmas without Fu-chan.
2016年8月にすーちゃん、2017年6月にうーちゃんという新しい家族を迎えました。若い2匹の女の子は愛らしく、エネルギーに満ちあふれているため、ふーちゃんがいなくなってグッと老いたおーちゃんも刺激をもらい少し元気になりました。それ以降3わんこと一緒に賑やかなクリスマスを過ごしています。
In August 2016, Su-chan and in June 2016 U-chan became our new family members. Oh-chan grew old quickly after he lost Fu-chan, but two lovely and energetic girls gave impetus to O-chan. We have spent a lively Christmas holiday with three dogs.
我が家のわんこ達は我々に構ってもらうことが好きです。特に「可愛い！」って言ってもらうことが大好きです。写真を撮られることを嫌がるどころか、かぶり物や洋服を着てポーズを撮ることが好きです。なぜなら、お利口にしていると、後でご褒美がもらえると知っているからでしょう。わんこ達に玩具、お菓子、洋服などのクリスマスプレゼントが用意されます。クリスマスケーキの上に載っている、苺もちょっともらえます。一緒に写真に写っているクリスマスツリーの刺繍は義母のお手製です。
Our dogs like to draw our attention and especially love to be told, “Kawaii!” (Cute!). They don’t mind photos being taken and rather like to be dressed up and pose for photos because they will get rewards for their behavior. Christmas gifts such as toys, snacks and clothes are ready for them. They are also given a little piece of a strawberry on a Christmas cake. The embroidery in the photos is made by my mother-in-law.
クリスマスは愛に満ちた楽しい時です。忘れられない素敵な思い出がたくさんあります。そのひとつが2004年（平成16年）12月に広島県福山市にある中央公園を愛犬と散歩したことです。光り輝くフェニックや多くの他の芸術作品の中にいるとファンタジーの世界に迷い込んだようでした。愛犬達はたくさんのサンタクロースに戸惑ったり、光る大きなトナカイに驚いたりしていました。忘れられないクリスマスの思い出のひとつです。
Christmas is a joyous season full of love. We have a lot of unforgettable sweet memories. One of them is the following: my family and our beloved dogs took a walk in Chuo Park, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture in December 2004 (Heisei 16th yr). The glorious phoenix and many other artistic objects gave us an illusion that we were in a fantasy world. Our dogs seemed to be puzzled by many Santa Clauses.
2004年（平成16年）のクリスマスは家族と一緒に倉敷チボリ公園で過ごしました。この公園は倉敷紡績の工場跡地に1997年（平成9年）にデンマークのコペンハーゲンのチボリ公園をモデルに開園しました。倉敷チボリ公園のクリスマスのイルミネーションが有名だということを全く知らずに、たまたま近くを通ったので寄ってみました。約10万個の電飾はとても幻想的でした。当時、この公園は入園者が激減して、経営難だと聞いていましたが、思ったよりたくさんの人が来園していました。後で分かったことですが、その年でその日が最も入園者が多かったそうです。その4年後の2009年（平成21年）1月1日午前1時に閉園してしまいました。現在、跡地はアウトレットパークになっています。
My family spent December 25th in 2004 (Heisei 16th yr) in Kurashiki Tivoli Garden. This garden was constructed on the former site of the Kurashiki-boseki factory on the model of Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1997 (Heisei 9th yr). Until we happened to drop in on that day, we didn’t know the Christmas illuminations there were famous. About 100,000 lights were very fantastic. As the number of visitors sharply declined, the management of the garden reportedly came to deteriorate. However, we saw more people than we expected. Later we found out it was the most-crowded day of the year. The garden was closed 4 years later, at 1:00 am on January 1st in 2009 (Heisei 21st). An outlet mall exists on the site at present.
実は私はちょっとディズニーが苦手です。幼い頃よりクマのぬいぐるみが大好きなので、ディズニーで唯一好きなキャラクターはダッフィーです。ディズニーランドもディズニーシーもあまり興味がありませんが、自分が経験していないものを一方的に批判するのは好きではないので行ってみると、予想以上に高揚している自分に驚きます。たびたび行こうとは思いませんが、多くの人を魅了する理由は分かります。時間に追われる煩雑な日々を忘れさせてくれる夢の国が、最も光り輝くのはクリスマスシーズンでしょう。2011年（平成23年）12月、息子はディズニーシーを訪れました。勉強に明け暮れる学生生活の中で一時、気の置けない仲間と楽しく過ごせたようです。
Actually, I am not a big fan of Disney. I have loved teddy bears since I was a child, so the only character that I like among Disney’s is Duffy. I am not so interested in either Disneyland or DisneySea, but I don’t like to criticize unilaterally what I have never experienced, so I went there and was surprised to find myself more excited than I had expected. I don’t think I will often visit them, but I came to understand why so many people have been fascinated by them. The dreamlands where people can forget busy troublesome daily lives may be the most brilliant in the Christmas season. In December 2011 (Heisei 23rd yr), my son visited DisneySea. He seemed to have a great time with his close friends for a short time while he was studying very hard every day.
スエーデンの大学病院で研修中だった息子が、休暇を利用してスエーデン国内や近隣諸国を時々旅行しました。フィンランドのロヴァニエミ市にあるサンタクロース村へも訪れました。雪に白いトナカイの引くソリは息子と2匹の犬を乗せて、白銀の森の中の一本道をゆっくり進んでいきました。小柄で童顔の息子は年齢より若くみえたのでしょうか、サンタクロースは幼い子供に接するように息子の頬を優しくつねったり抱き寄せたりした後、トナカイのぬいぐるみをプレゼントしてくれました。村内にある郵便局で息子が申し込んでくれたサンタクロースからの手紙がクリスマスの少し前に届きました。
While my son was training at the hospital in Sweden, he sometimes travelled around Sweden and some neighboring countries for his holidays. He also visited Santa Claus’ Village in Rovaniemi City in Finland. The sledge which carried my son and two dogs was slowly pulled by a snowy white reindeer along the road in the woods. My son seemingly looked younger to Santa Claus because of his boyish-looking face and a rather small stature. Santa Claus gently pinched my son on his cheek, hugged him like a small boy and gave him a Christmas present, a stuffed reindeer. Several days before Christmas, I received a Christmas card from Santa Claus which my son ordered at the post office in the village.
欧米でのクリスマスの過ごし方は、キリスト教徒は教会へ行き、自宅で家族とともに過ごすのが一般的です。しかし日本では、最も家族と過ごすことが多いのはお正月です。クリスマスを家族と迎える人もいますが、特に若い人達は恋人とデートしたり、友人と遊びに行ったりすることもよくあります。我が家でもしばしば友人を招いて、クリスマスパーティーを開きます。12月24日や25日より、数日前の週末に集まってお料理やお酒を楽しむことが多いです。お料理好きの息子が友人のために腕によりをかけて料理を作ることもあります。そんな時、必ず作るのが彼の祖母のレシピのローストチキンです。
Europeans and Americans commonly spend their Christmas holidays with their family and Christians naturally go to church. However, in Japan the biggest family time is New Year’s Day. Japanese also spend Christmas time with their family but often go out with their sweethearts or friends, especially young people. In our case, we often invite our friends to our Christmas parties. We usually gather together not on December 24th or 25th but several days before Christmas and enjoy food and drink. My son likes cooking very much and sometimes puts all his cooking skills to entertain his friends. He always makes the roast chicken from his grandmother’s recipe.
2017年（平成29年）は可愛い高校生の皆さんがクリスマスパーティーに参加してくれました。クリスマスソングをBGMにお料理やケーキを食べたり、ビンゴやゲームをしたりしました。元気な笑い声が家中に広がり、私達夫婦も若返ったような気分になりました。皆さんに楽しんでいただけたようで良かったです。
In 2017 (Heisei 29th yr), cute high school students joined our Christmas party. They enjoyed dishes and sweets and played bingo and some other games with Christmas themed background music. Our house was filled with their cheerful laughter and we felt like we were younger again. We were happy they enjoyed themselves.
