◆復活祭はイエス・キリストが死後3日目に復活したことを祝う、キリスト教の祭日です。
Easter is the Christian festival and holiday celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his death.

◆キリスト教徒以外の日本人にとって、復活祭はあまり馴染みがないかもしれませんが、キリスト教にとって復活祭はクリスマスと並んで最も大切な日です。
Except for Christians, Japanese may be unfamiliar with Easter, however, for the Christian religion Easter is regarded as important as Christmas.

◆復活祭は移動祝日で日付はその年によって変わり、復活祭計算法（コンプトゥス・パスカーリス）によって算出されます。
The calendar date of Easter varies from year to year, and it is determined by “computus paschalis”

◆復活祭は春分の日の後の最初の満月の次にくる日曜日です。
Easter falls on the Sunday following the full moon that follows the northern spring equinox.

◆復活祭前の40日間を四旬節（しじゅんせつ）と呼び、イエス・キリストの40日間断食と苦難にちなみ、祈り、悔悛、節制、慈善の期間です。
A period of 40 days before Easter is called “Quadragesima” (“the 40th” in Latin) or “Great Lent” (“spring” in the Germanic language) when Christians devote themselves to prayer, repentance, temperance and charity in association with Jesus Christ’s 40-day fasting and sufferings.

◆キリスト教徒は四旬節の間、本来は肉料理や乳製品を食べることを節制していましたが、現代では敬虔なクリスチャンを除いて、アルコール、チーズ、チョコレートなどの自分の好きな嗜好品などを控えるだけです。
During Great Lent, Christians originally abstained from meat and dairy products, and nowadays, with the exception of pious Christians, they just give up their favorite luxury items such as alcohol, cheese or chocolate.

◆謝肉祭（カーニバル）の起源は厳粛な四旬節の期間に入る前に行う祝宴です。
Carnivals originated from the feast which was held before the strict period of Lent.

◆復活前日は聖土曜日と呼ばれ、その夜の徹夜祭では成人の洗礼式が行われます。
The day before Easter Sunday is called Holy Saturday, and a baptism for adults is held at a service called Easter vigil on the evening of the day.

◆復活祭の日は、クリスマスや感謝祭同様に家族が集まる日で、晴れ着を着て教会のミサに参列した後、家に戻りラム、卵料理、スイーツなどのご馳走を一緒に食べます。
Easter Sunday is a family time as well as Christmas and Thanksgiving Day, and after people attend Mass at church in their Sunday best, they have elaborated dishes such as roast lamb, egg dishes and sweets together at home.

◆誕生を象徴する卵は伝統的にイースターのシンボルとなっており、色鮮やかに絵を描いた茹で卵や、卵形のチョコレートや、お菓子の入った卵の模型のイースターエッグでお祝いをします。
Eggs, which symbolize birth, are traditionally used as a symbol of Easter, such as colorful painted boiled eggs, egg-shaped chocolate or egg-shaped cases filled with sweets.

◆屋内外に隠した卵を探すエッグハンティングや、スプーンに卵を載せて走るエッグレース、できるだけ遠くまで卵を投げるエッグトッシングなど、卵を使った様々なゲームを楽しみます。
There are various enjoyable games with eggs: “Egg hunting” is to look for eggs hidden indoors or outdoors, “Egg rolling” is to roll eggs without breaking them, “Egg race” is to run with an egg on a spoon, and “Egg tossing” is to toss an egg as far as possible.

◆ホワイトハウスでは1878年にラザフォード大統領の時代から、芝生の上の卵を大きなスプーンで転がす競争、イースターエッグロールが、今でも毎年行われています。
In the White House, the Easter Egg Roll, a race of rolling an egg on the grass with a big spoon, has been held every year since 1878, the presidency of Rutherford Hayes.

◆もう一つの代表的なイースターの象徴はうさぎであり、多産であるため名誉ある役割を果たすことになりました。
Rabbits play an honorable role as another representative symbol of Easter, because they are prolific breeders.

◆日本のキリスト教信者数は国民の約1%だけですが、最近ではイースターのイベントがあちこちで開催され、特に東京ディズニーランドやユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン（USJ）では盛大に祝われます。
Though only about 1% of Japanese people are Christians, nowadays Easter events are held in various places, and especially Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) celebrate Easter splendidly.

◆お菓子や雑貨などイースター関連商品も発売されるようになりました。
Easter related products such as sweets and miscellaneous goods have gradually come to be sold.

◆これらのイベントや商品のほとんどは宗教的なものではなく、日本でのハロウィンやクリスマス同様、単に楽しむものです。
Most of these events and products are not religious but take place just for fun like Halloween and Christmas in Japan.
