The restoration of Tokyo Station started in 2007 (Heisei 19th) and was eventually completed in 2012 (Heisei 24th). Tokyo Station celebrated its 100th Anniversary and various celebration events were held. I happened to see one of them, the Tokyo Station lighting-up event. Though I went to Tokyo Station many times, I often lost my way. After I parked my car in the underground parking lot on that day, I went up to the first floor and found myself already lost. Tokyo Station is undoubtedly too big and complicated for me.<\/p>\n

Unlike the historical building on the Marunouchi side, Yaesu-guchi of Tokyo Station was reborn on the theme of \u201cinnovative sprit\u201d and \u201cadvanced spirit\u201d. The station square was improved to be a spacious open place. In 2014 (Heisei 26th), I happened to pass by Yaesu-guchi and found the pillars shining. The signboard said that this installation called \u201cTokyo Colors 2014\u201d was an illumination to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tokyo Station. The wind currents were automatically visualized with computer graphics and luminous balls were changing their colors by acquiring data from 28 wind gauges on the passages in GranRoof.<\/p>\n

If I am asked which illumination I would recommend in Tokyo, I cannot choose one because it depends on age, gender and companions. However, I can immediately mention the illumination which I like best. It is definitely the illumination in Marunouchi. I really like the graceful and sophisticated champagne gold light. Marunouchi is the office district for adults. Elite employees in high-quality business suits were smartly walking below the illumination.<\/p>\n

In 2009 (Heisei 21st yr), \u201cStrasbourg Marche de Noel\u201d was held in Tokyo International Forum. This market was a reproduction of a market which had been opened since 1570 in Strasbourg, the Alsace District, France which was the birthplace of the Christmas tree. The small wooden shops decorated with Christmas ornaments were crammed with items which were not yet imported into Japan and were sold only during the holiday season. In 2010 (Heisei 22nd), the market was opened again as the result of the emphatic success of the previous year. We visited this market and bought berry jam and Christmas ornaments. We also enjoyed having meals and wine. We were excited about seeing beautiful French male and female salesclerks.<\/p>\n

In December 2010 (Heisei 22nd), we went to Mitsubishi Ichigo-kan in Marunouchi Brick Square with our dogs. Mitsubishi-Ichigo-kan was built in 2009 (Heisei 21st yr) as a replica of the first Japanese office building built by the British architect, Josiah Conder in 1894 (Meiji 27th yr). Mitsubishi-ichigo-kan incudes a museum, a gallery, a shop and a historical reference book. The aesthetic brick building was beautifully shining, and I felt as if I had been walking along the street somewhere in Europe. While my husband and son were appreciating the artistic works owned by the Lenbachhaus in the museum, I was waiting with our dogs and took photos of them. The Brick Square at the back of the museum was also shining with a seasonal sparkle.<\/p>\n

After we left Marunouchi Brick Square, we went to the Outer Gardens of the Imperial Palace for the fifth-annual light festival \u201cKouto Tokyo LIGHTOPIA 2010\u201d (The Shining Capital Tokyo LIGHTPIA 2010\u201d. \u201cAmbient Candle Park\u201d in Wada Fountain Park was the festival of fountains and around 600 candles painted by elementary students and celebrities. \u201cHikari-no-art installation Koryu\u201d (The Shining Art Installation, Koryu (Light Stream) was along the Imperial moat.<\/p>\n

We often visit Hibiya Park to walk our dogs or join an event. Several Kami-yashiki (the main residence of high-ranking feudal lords) used to be there during the Edo period (1603-1867). This land was converted into an army training center for some time during the Meiji ear (1868-1912). Nowadays, it is a vast Metropolitan park of 160,000 square meters. Shisei-kaikan (Municipal Administration Hall or Municipal Research Building), a public hall, a concert hall and a library are on the site. There are 5 tennis courts with lighting facilities which allow us to play even in the evening. Matsumoto-ro, our favorite restaurant has been in business since 1903 (Meiji 36th yr) when the park opened. The branch shop of the Hibiya-kadan Floral which is found all around Japan is in one corner of the park. Hibiya-kandn Floral is a floral company established in 1872 (Meiji 5th yr). It introduced various bridal customs such as flower ornaments, candle services and presenting bouquets to parents of brides and grooms. I look forward to seeing a Christmas tree in front of the branch shop every year.<\/p>\n

Every time Christmas comes around, all the shops in Ginza are elaborately decorated as if they entered a competition. They make all of Ginza much more gorgeous than usual. When I listen to popular Christmas music from speakers on the streets, various memories come back to my mind. In 2014 (Heisei 26th), we went to Ginza to see the last Christmas tree presented by a famous pearl company, Mikimoto. The Christmas trees in front of Mikimoto brilliantly lit up the street for about 40 years in the holiday season. In 2017 (Heisei 29th), Mikimoto\u2019s Christmas tree was reborn as pure white Christmas trees in the show window of its rebuilt building.<\/p>\n

The shining lights which are arranged on the theme of the universe fascinate visitors and music adds a romantic atmosphere. The vast site is separated into several parts where we can enjoy various elaborate designs of Christmas illumination such as \u201cStarlight Zone\u201d, \u201cStardust Zone\u201d, \u201cWelcome Illumination\u201d, \u201cTree Illumination\u201d and \u201cChampagne Illumination\u201d. Christmas romantic effects are arranged on the observation platform of Mori Building, \u201cTokyo City View\u201d every year. Roppongi Hills was built on the site which the residence of the daimyo (the feudal lord) of the Chofu-Mori Family and opened in 2003 (Heisei 15th yr). It is a mega-commercial complex including 54-story Mori Tower and some other buildings: a TV corporation, offices, a hotel, a museum, movie theaters, stores, restaurants and residences.<\/p>\n

I sometimes stopped by Akasaka Sacas after I had meals with my friend who ran a Japanese restaurant near Akasaka-mitsuke Station. It is a commercial complex including the TBS Broadcasting Center, restaurants, stores and event venues. The Akasaka ACT Theater is located within the grounds of Akasaka Sacas where I saw plays several times. In spring, various kinds of cherry blossoms are in bloom, and in summer a big event called \u201cTBS Natsu Sacas\u201d (The TBS Summer Sacas Festival) is held. In autumn, we cannot miss red leaves of the cherry trees and Halloween events. In winter, the skate rink opens where people enjoy skating and take a skating lesson. Christmas trees and illuminations are shown throughout Akasaka Sacas.<\/p>\n

Around 300,000 LEDs create impressive sights with a theme which changes every year. The photos taken in 2009 (Heisei 21st yr) shows \u201cBlue Ocean\u201d, a 12-minute light and musical show which was produced by an eminent violinist, Taro Hakase. \u201cThe Promising Tree\u201d was in the center of the blue brilliant ocean, and many couples were waiting in line for their romantic photos.<\/p>\n

We would go shopping at the supermarket in Bunkyo Green Court once or twice a week because it was close to our place and there was a parking lot for customers. Aka-mon (the red gate) at Hongo Campus of Tokyo University was a Goshuden-mon (the gate built for Tokugawa Shoguns\u2019 daughters) built in 1872 (Bunesei 10th) when the 13th lord of the Kaga Domani, Maeda Nariyasu got married to Yasu-hime (Princess Yasu) who was the daughter of the 11th Shogun, Tokugawa Ienari. Aka-mon, a nickname of Tokyo University came from this gate and it was designated as a national important cultural property. When you walk through the gate and go straight, you will see the soft illumination in front of building No.2 of the medical department. I wish these lights decorated by some volunteers would reach the patients\u2019 hearts in the affiliated hospital though they cannot come to see them.<\/p>\n

When I drove along Kyu-Hakusan-dori (the Former Hakusan Street) through the residential area at night, I suddenly caught sight of bright LED lights. They were \u201cHikari-no-hashira (the Pillars of light) in Hakusan Campus of Toyo University. The illumination was based around blue which was the symbol color of Toyo University and changed into various colors. I liked its peaceful atmosphere suitable for the university campus. However, it was several years ago that a Christmas illumination was lit there last though I don\u2019t know the reason. The other campuses of Toyo University still hold the events of Christmas lights.<\/p>\n

Harima-zaka Slope lined with cherry trees is one of our dogs\u2019 walking courses. Except for local people, not many individuals usually walk along this slope in the residential area, but so many people visit this slope to see cherry blossoms during the season. This slope is occasionally chosen as shooting locations and I saw famous actors and actresses a few times. One day I was walking there with my camera hanging from my neck, and a member of the shooting staff told me to put my camera into my bag. Therefore, I angrily told him that I had a camera not for taking the actors and actresses but my dogs. In winter, I really like to walk along the quiet avenue under the cherry trees which are dressed in pinkish lights.<\/p>\n

Christmas illuminations in Tokyo attract us with their individual ideas, and as for Tokyo Dome City, we can enjoy very lovely original Christmas art. It gives us peace of mind all the more because there are no big changes every year. It is within a 5-minute driving distance, so we often walk our dogs with cups of cappuccino from Starbucks there in our hands and buy groceries at the supermarket. This is not so crowded even in the Christmas season if we go there at night, and it has moderate size amusement facilities, so it is a comfortable place for us. I am dreaming to ride a shining merry-go-round someday with my future grandchildren.<\/p>\n

The children were excitedly catching the snow.<\/p>\n

In December 2012 (Heisei 24th yr), we took our dogs for a walk to Ueno Park. We found the animals such as giraffes, a gorilla, monkeys, squirrels and a bear sparkling in the dark near Ueno Zoo. I like such cute decorations as well as refined gorgeous illuminations. This was a good place to visit with children. While we were walking in the park, we dropped in Starbucks which just opened in \u201cTake-no-dai Hiroba\u201d (Take-no-dai square) in April of that year. The relaxing shop mainly made of wood harmonizes with Ueno Woods. The good news was that dogs were allowed at the terrace seats.<\/p>\n

On December 23rd, 2013 (Heisei 25th yr) I asked my son to join me in taking photos of Tokyo Skytree full of a Christmas atmosphere though I was thinking probably he was busy dating. However, he accepted my offer because he would date with his girlfriend the next day. Christmas for young people except Christians is a romantic dating time rather than a family time in Japan. Solamachi Christmas Market 2013 was held in an open space at the foot of the Skytree. \u201cH\u00fctte\u201d, small stalls imported directly from Germany were fantastically designed with attention to every detail. Wonderful Christmas items were piled up all round the stalls. We bought hot wine in a cute cup of a Christmas tree.<\/p>\n

In spring, many people come and enjoy these cherry trees in full bloom.<\/p>\n

Due to its overwhelming popularity, the lighting-up event on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays was canceled for safety reasons. This was surely worth joining despite its jam, therefore I wished this event would be held again the next year but it would never be held in Nakameguro again. In 2017 (Heisei 29th), Blue Grotto was revived in Shibuya. The number of blue light bulbs increased to around 600,000. The street at our feet reflected gently and beautifully as if it was the surface of the water.<\/p>\n

After a while, we finally reached a famous galette restaurant. It whisked us to a doll house in a fantasy world, and every part of the restaurant was truly photogenic. The world\u2019s biggest Baccarat chandelier placed annually in the Center Square from November to New Year days, attracts all the people visiting there. I enjoyed a marvelous dinner and chatting with my close friend at a ch\u00e2teau restaurant, Jo\u00ebl Robuchon near the chandelier.<\/p>\n

The Southern Terrace Exit of JR Shinjuku Station was newly opened in 2006 (Heisei 18th) and thanks to this exit, people can go to Takashimaya Department Store more easily. In December of the same year, the first Krispy Kreme Doughnuts store opened there and so many people lined up to buy doughnuts every day; however, it was closed in 2017 (Heisei 29 yr). Takashimaya Times Square and East Japan Railway Company jointly host an annual event of the winter illumination.<\/p>\n

When I watched the big hit TV drama \u201cIkebukuro West Gate Park\u201d in 2003 (Heisei 15th yr), I first got interested in Ikebukuro Town. Looking back now, some of the glamourous screencast were already stars those days, and many others have become big stars today. The work which was written by Kankuro Kudo and mainly produced by Yukihiko Tsutsumi is certainly a masterpiece. Ikebukuro is a suitable place for a chaotic drama. A stranger around Ikebukuro is confused only by the fact Seibu (literally the west of the Musashi region) Department Store is at the east exit, and Tobu (literally the east of the Musashi region) Department Store is at the west exit. The various shops such as stylish apparel shops, ramen restaurants, cram schools, banks and sex industries shockingly line up on the same streets. Recently, the town especially on the east side has been getting refined but is still chaotic. However, I still like Ikebukuro and sometimes go there. As Ikebukuro is a unique place, it does not place emphasis on its Christmas illuminations apart from other towns in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

When you walk along the busy street to the west of the East Gate of Ikebukuro Station for around 5 minutes, there is a quiet and calm atmosphere all around. A few more steps will bring you to the academic buildings of Rikkyo University, also known as Saint Paul\u2019s University. It is an Anglican Christian affiliated private university established in1922 (Taisho 11th yr). Two 100-year-old Himalayan cedars in front of the historical brick main building are covered with colorful soft lights. The Christmas worship and a hand-bell concert are held at the chapel on the campus every year.<\/p>\n
