Japanese people generally have a very tolerant view of religion, and most people casually believe in both Buddhism and Shintoism due to the historical background, which I will write about next time. The unique Japanese religious outlook, non-religious in some cases, fortunately doesn\u2019t produce serious friction or criticism between religions; however, I sometimes question Japanese people\u2019s religious ideas and feel rather sorry that they celebrate Christianity-related events such as St. Valentine\u2019s Day, Halloween and Christmas without knowing their origins, and unfortunately, companies and shops seem to be more interested in their economic effect than their real meanings.<\/p>\n

As for Easter, more sweets, ornaments and other general goods with the motif of rabbits and eggs, which are the symbol of birth and fertility, have been sold since around 2016. Japanese people began to recognize Easter, but, in May and April, they join various events including graduation ceremonies, entrance ceremonies, company initiation ceremonies, spring vacations, and Hanami (cherry blossom viewing), in addition, the date of Easter weekend changes every year because Easter Day is always the first Sunday after the first calculated Full Moon on or after March 21st. Therefore, Easter may not become so popular as a happy event as other Christian related events in Japan. In my home, rabbits, birds and eggs are displayed during the holy period every year, and I enjoy egg hunting with my students.<\/p>\n

Easter vigil was a service held after sundown on Holy Saturday, Easter eve. Outside the church, a big and tall candle is lit with a fire blessed by a priest. This fire, a symbol of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, leads Christians singing a hymn into the church. After the Resurrection service, the Christian ritual of baptism for adults is performed.<\/p>\n

Many amusement parks hold annual events such as Halloween and Christmas to acquire both new and frequent customers. Among them, Tokyo Disneyland and Universal Studios Japan (USJ) hold fascinating events on overwhelming scales. Recently, Easter also plays an important role in a marketing strategy of attracting visitors. My sister sent me happy photos of Disney Easter. She fully enjoyed Easter shows, parades, egg hunt and buying Easter related goods in the dreamland which was colored by Easter eggs and flowers.<\/p>\n

When I took a business trip to Yamaguchi Prefecture in the spring, I visited Kaikyo Yume Tower after work. It was a clear day, so I enjoyed its 360-degree magnificent view on the observatory at 143 meters high. Inside, the tower was decorated with Easter bunnies and eggs.<\/p>\n

I took a trip with my son to Italy in May, several years ago. Some stores were filled with Easter ornaments and sweets in a rabbit or an egg shape. We were impressed with the Italians\u2019 sense of beautiful colors and stylish designs.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, Easter sweets are sold at supermarkets and grocery stores. Many of them are imported sweets. I bought chocolate in Disney capsules at the convenience store nearby. Nowadays, in consideration of egg allergy, egg-shaped chocolate or sweets in egg shaped cases are often used for games instead of real eggs. Some cake shops and bakeries have started to sell special sweets during the Easter period. Easter\u2019s representative bun is a hot cross bun which is sweet with raisins and is marked with a cross on the top.<\/p>\n
