Finally, I went to see Dezome-shiki by the Tokyo Fire Department, which I had always wanted to see, on January 6th in 2015 (Heisei 27th yr). It was held at Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, Koto Ward, Tokyo and was broadcast by NHK, Japan\u2019s public broadcaster, from 11:05 to 11:45 am.<\/p>\n

\u958b\u5f0f\u306e30\u5206\u524d\u306b\u6771\u4eac\u30d3\u30c3\u30b0\u30b5\u30a4\u30c8\u306b\u5230\u7740\u3057\u307e\u3057\u305f\u304c\u3001\u99d0\u8eca\u5834\u304b\u3089\u4f1a\u5834\u307e\u3067\u6b69\u3044\u306615\u5206\u304f\u3089\u3044\u304b\u304b\u308a\u3001\u4f1a\u5834\u306b\u7740\u3044\u305f\u6642\u306f\u65e2\u306b\u7a7a\u5e2d\u306f\u306a\u304f\u306a\u3063\u3066\u3044\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002\u5e78\u3044\u898b\u3084\u3059\u3044\u7acb\u898b\u5e2d\u3092\u78ba\u4fdd\u3067\u304d\u305f\u306e\u3067\u3001\u5f35\u308a\u5207\u3063\u3066\u30ab\u30e1\u30e9\u3092\u69cb\u3048\u307e\u3057\u305f\u3002<\/p>\n

I arrived at Tokyo Big Sight 30 minutes before the opening, but it was about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot to the grounds, and all the seats were already occupied. Fortunately, I found good standing room and excitedly held my camera.<\/p>\n

The following guests delivered congratulatory addresses; Satoshi Ninoyu, the Senior Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, Naoki Takashima, the President of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly, Toshifumi Akimoto, the Chairperson of Japan Firefighters Association and Hitoshi Okiyama, the Chairperson of Tokyo Firefighters Association. I could not see them directly from my place, but I could clearly see them on the big monitor on the truck nearby.<\/p>\n

After the firefighters sang in union the Tokyo Fire Department Song (the words of which were shown on the monitor and in the pamphlet), the governor and the guests left in open cars. The firefighters and people concerned with firefighting, who contributed greatly while on duty in the previous year, were commended. The brass band in its uniforms looked dignified and the color guard in its red uniform was gorgeous.<\/p>\n

\nShotai-soren is a term referring to foot drill in which members of a platoon march, halt and change direction to words of command from their commanders. I wondered how long they spent enduring strict drills while I was watching them walk with regular and stately steps.<\/p>\n

Many groups besides firefighters paraded. I did not know that there were so many groups concerned with firefighting. I was most interested in the firefighting dogs. They were well-trained, so they marched bravely in step with the participants without flinching among the many people and heavy sounds.<\/p>\n

The mascot of the Tokyo Fire Department, Kyuta, marched together with the Junior Firefighters. Kyuta was named after a combination of \u2018kyu\u2019 sound of \u2018119 ichi-ichi-kyu\u2019 (an emergency call number), \u2018Kyujo (aid)\u2019, \u2018Kyukyu (emergency)\u2019, \u2018Resukyu (rescue)\u2019 and \u2018Kinkyu (urgency)\u2019 and \u2018ta\u2019 sound from \u2018Ooku no hito wo tasukeru\u2019 (to help many people).<\/p>\n

Kyuta wears a red suit with the image of a firefighter\u2019s uniform and an emergency call number 119 is on his chest. He also wears a blue helmet with the image of water for fire extinguishing and he can sense danger using two yellow antennas on the helmet.<\/p>\n

Many of the male audience members got excited when the state-of-the-art fire engines, ladder trucks and fire pumpers began parading, though they were quiet until that time. I learned about various fire engines with each role. Colorful flags fluttered in the wind from the top of the ladders which were highly extended from the fire engines in a row. Fireboats powerfully shot water simultaneously. All the programs outside were over after the national flag lowering and the closing ceremony. This Dezome-shiki consisted of about 3000 firefighters and people concerned and 150 fire engines, fire helicopters and fireboats in total.<\/p>\n

I was surprised to see incomparable skills of Yusuke Ito who is a Guinness holder and one of the best professional Kendama players. After his performance, he taught children how to do Kendama.<\/p>\n

After winning the lotteries, 240 pairs of individuals could experience test-rides for ladder trucks and 100 pairs for fire engines.<\/p>\n
