Speaking of summer memories of my childhood, I can list many events: summer festivals, Bon dances, swimming in the sea and catching insects. Fireworks are among them, and my family and I enjoyed fireworks in the yard or at nearby parks every summer. Constant improvements in fireworks techniques have produced large-scale products with wide variations. However, I like traditional senko-hanabi (a sparkler) because of its fragile gleam and faint crackling. The senko-hanabi changes its expression several times from the beginning to the end. Each phase has a name: bud\u2192peony\u2192pine needle\u2192willow\u2192scattering chrysanthemum.<\/p>\n

My son and his friends played with fireworks during the training camp for their club activities. Fireworks are indispensable for summer camps and barbecues. Unfortunately, the places we are allowed to enjoy fireworks have been decreasing because of bad manners, safety problems and big sounds.\u3000We need to obey the rules so that we would not bother others. And we have to keep a bucket full of water on hand and try not to wear clothes which burn easily such as chemical fiber to prevent accidents.<\/p>\n

Asakusa-bashi is one of my favorite towns in Tokyo as well as Kappa-bashi in Taito Ward, where there are many shops selling cooking and dining accessories, and Kanda-jinbo-cho in Chiyoda Ward, which is famous for many used bookstores. In Asakusa-bashi, there are many exciting shops such as famous doll shops, wholesale stores of clothing and handmade materials, large stationary shops and artificial flower shops. With the summer drawing near, some shops start to sell many kinds of fireworks at a reasonable price. The domestic fireworks market is shrinking because less expensive Chinese fireworks recently have been imported. However, the market of fireworks displays is emerging due to more and more spectators \uff0d both domestic and overseas.<\/p>\n

We spent 2 years in Kanazawa which still has a splendid atmosphere of a million koku, one of the most prosperous feudal clans in the Edo period, because of my husband\u2019s job transfer. In summer, Hokkoku Fireworks Display was held at the Sai River Green Park nearby, which was so popular that people even paid for reserved seats. Luckily, we could enjoy watching more than 12,000 fireworks from the living room of our apartment. However, we felt sorry for our dogs which hated fireworks and were trembling the entire time the fireworks were being set off.<\/p>\n

The Edogawa Fireworks Festival is counted among the three major Tokyo Fireworks Festivals along with the Sumida River Fireworks Festival and the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festivals. More than one million spectators break out into cheers at splendid fireworks every year. In August 2008 (Heisei 20th yr), my son and his friends went to the festival wearing yukata\u3000(casual cotton kimono for summer). Many onlookers were sitting on the bank and excitedly waiting for the fireworks after dark. The explosions of light and sound fascinated them.<\/p>\n

In August 2012 (Heisei 24th yr), my son went back to the Edogawa Fireworks Festival with his friends.
\nForgetting the heat of summer, they greatly enjoyed the dynamic show and sounds spreading in the night sky. He was impressed with the craftsmanship of the firework artist.<\/p>\n

The Adachi Fireworks Festival is held every year at the Arakawa riverbed in Adachi Ward, Tokyo at the end of July. In July 2010 (Heisei 22nd yr), my son went to see this firework display with his friends.
\nBeing in charge of securing a spot for viewing the fireworks, he went to the viewing spot with blue plastic sheets more than 9 hours before the starting time. Unfortunately, it was stormy in the morning and they were worried about the event being cancelled, but in the evening conditions somewhat improved.<\/p>\n

The Sumida River Fireworks Festivals are annual events held along the Sumida River around Asakusa (Taito Ward, Tokyo) and Mukojima (Sumida Ward, Tokyo) on the last Saturday of July.
\nIts origin is the oldest fireworks festival in Japan in 1733 (Kyoho 18th yr). Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 8th Shogun, ordered his men to hold the first fireworks festival in Japan to console the many souls of the dead by severe famine and cholera in the previous year and pray for the elimination of evil spirits. These fireworks festivals were suspended for several reasons such as the Meiji Restoration, World War ll and water pollution of the Sumida River, and since 1978 (Showa 53rd yr), when this fireworks festival resumed, it has been held every year. In 2011 (Heisei 23rd yr), my son and his friends went to the 34th Sumida River Fireworks Festival. Many fireworks festivals were canceled to express mourning to the more than 15,000 victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami which happened on March 11th of the same year. However, the 2011 Sumida River Fireworks Festivals was held though it was postponed until August 27th.<\/p>\n

In 1991 (Heisei 3rd yr),Ryogoku Fireworks Museum was opened in Ryogoku, Sumida Ward, Tokyo, known as the birthplace of the summer evening fireworks display. This museum, where the exhibits showing the history and techniques of fireworks are displayed, is managed by the Japan Pyrotechnics Association and Sumida Ward Tourist Association.In 2010 (Heisei 22nd yr), while visiting the Eko-in Temple and Sumo stables in Ryogoku, I came across this museum. This museum with rare exhibits was very small but interesting to me.<\/p>\n

After appreciating the masterpieces from the Mus\u00e9e d’Orsay at the National Art Center, Tokyo with my family, we went to Tokyo Midtown. When we were enjoying Mexican food, which is my favorite, on the terrace seats, rhythmical music suddenly came floating up from the lawn area in Midtown Garden, and it became light. The summer special event started, which was mizu-hanabi, fireworks created not with gun powder but with water, light and music. Columns of water sent up to the sky were 60m at their highest point and laser beams reproduced auroras.<\/p>\n
