first botanical garden in Japan, the Koishikawa Botanical Garden in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo is freely opened for people on MIDORI-NO-HI.
This garden is located near my house, so I have visited it several times.
It is usually a quiet place with not so many people though a titan arum, a very rare flower, which bloomed after a 19-year absence, caused a great excitement in July, 2010 (Heisei 22nd yr).
On MIDORI-NO-HI in 2015 (Heisei 27th yr), my son went there to take pictures.
Owing to free admission, a lot of families were there, and some of them were having lunch on the grassy open space.
It is the education and laboratory facilities whose formal name is the Affiliated Botanical Garden, Graduate School of Science, the University of Tokyo.
It originated as the Koishikawa Oyakuen (the Koishikawa Medicinal Herb Garden) which was established in 1684 (Jokyo 1st yr) for medicinal herbs by the Tokugawa Shogunate.
In 1722 (Kyoho 7th yr), Koishikawa Ryoyojyo (the Koishikawa Sanatorium), which is famous for an Akahige (red beard) doctor was opened in the Koishikawa Oyakuen free of charge for people.
In 1877 (Meiji 10th yr), soon after Tokyo Imperial University was established, it became the affiliated botanical garden and opened for the public.
About 4,000 species of plants are grown and researched on the huge ground of 161,588㎡ which has made the most of a natural landform.
In 2012 (Heisei 24th yr), its historical value received recognition and was specified as a national scenic beauty and historical site.
The former main building of the Tokyo Medical School in the garden is the oldest building in the facilities of Tokyo Universities, and is a nationally designated important cultural property.
This building was built on the Hongo Campus in 1876 (Meiji 9th yr) and was relocated into this garden in 1969 (Showa 44th yr).

息子は小石川植物園を出た後、同じくみどりの日の無料開放をしている文京区本駒込の六義園（りくぎえん）へ行きました。<br 320 years ago, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun, bestowed a huge piece of land of about 90,000㎡ on his secretary, Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu.
It took as long as 7 years to construct　KAIYU-SHIKI TSUKI-YAMA SENSUI TEIEN (a garden consisting of a hill, a pond and a path around the pond) with his design and under his command.
And then, the garden was named after the six principles of WAKA, which was quoted from the old Chinese collection of poems to the preface of “KOKIN-WAKASHU” by Kino Tsurayuki.
After Yoshiyasu’s death, the garden fell into disrepair though this garden was used as the suburban residence by the Yanagisawa Family until the end of the Edo period.
In 1868 (Meiji 1st yr), Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi Zaibatsu (a financial and business combine) bought this garden, reconstructed it and surrounded it with the existing red brick wall.
In 1938 (Showa 13th yr), the garden was donated to Tokyo and has been opened for the public.
In 1953 (Showa 28th yr), it was designated as a national special place of scenic beauty.
People can still enjoy the original atmosphere of this garden because it was undamaged by the great fires of the Edo period, the Great Kanto Earthquake and even the Great Tokyo Air Raids.

（「<a
