in Bukyo Ward, Tokyo used to be the suburban residence of Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu who was the secretary of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the fifth Shogun.
In 1965 (Genroku 8th yr), he was given a huge piece of land of about 90,000㎡ by Tsunayoshi, and made hills and ponds, built buildings and bridges and planted many plants to make a splendid garden.
In the Meiji Period, it came into the hands of Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of the Mitsubishi Zaibatsu (a financial and business combine), and in 1938 (Showa 13th yr), it was donated to Tokyo.
Weeping cherries were very famous as graceful trees, and as I used to live nearby, I visited there for cherry blossom viewing every spring.
Autumn tints were also well-known as well as weeping cherries and both of them were floodlit at their best, so I enjoyed visiting that garden in the evening during the floodlight period every year.
However, not so many people visited the hydrangea garden there.
Though there were only 15 kinds and about 1000 roots, I liked the hydrangeas in the obscure corner of the gorgeous garden of a Japanese feudal lord.

<a
