There have been about 1000 cherry
trees in the Atago Shrine on the top of
Kuroda Tadayuki, the second master
of the Fukuoka Clan, ordered people to plant about 1000 cherry trees in 1634 (Kanei 11th yr) to make a prayer
for the merchants’ prosperity, because a lot of merchants lived in Fukuoka.
It is said that
These cherry trees are
called ‘ATAGO SAKURA’, Atago
cherry trees, and these fortunate cherry trees are popular among people.

On one Sunday during ATAGO SAKURA MATSURI, people can enjoy
the tea ceremony and a concert of KOTO

People celebrate the
blooming of Atago cherry trees in ATAGO SAKURA WAKA-YOMI-KAI (the Atago cherry tree Japanese poetry composing party) just as
if they were in picture scrolls in the
There used to be a cable car
traveling between the foot of the mountain to the top from 1928 (Showa 3rd yr)
up until World War U.
Now people drive to the top, or
climb up the long stairs.
The stairs were steeper and
farther apart than I expected, and I was quickly out of breath.

I felt admiration for the elderly
people, who seemed older than 70 years old, as they quickly walked up the
mountain path, and paid homage to the shrine.
When I visited the Atago Shrine, the cherry blossoms were already starting to
fall because of an unusually warm spring.
